If the city were commons what would it look like, taste like, sound like, feel like, and smell like? How would individuals, community
groups and institutions work together to realise their vision?
Since October 2014 a group of interested commoners – artists, designers, gardeners, and others – have been meeting together, on a fortnightly basis, to explore the theme 'If the City were a Commons ...' Through group discussions, presentations, reading groups, and workshops we've edged towards, moved away from, and circled around our Commons theme.
What does the Commons mean for each of us? How does the Commons relate to a city like Dundee? Are we, as a community, a Commons-in-the-making? And, finally, how much dissonance can the Commons as a concept and practice sustain?
In light of our discussions we've decided to create a Dundee Commons Festival. This is a week-long learning experience due to take place between 24th - 30th August 2015.
In the context of the festival we'll be exploring social and environmental aspects of the Commons whilst also celebrating alternative economies of exchange. These alternative economies include food, dance, community planning, poetry, song, the visual and the digital arts. We'll be hosting workshops and talks by invited speakers and artists and harvesting contributions from the wider Commons network in Dundee.
